Cork FAQs

Q. What size corks does Scott Labs offer?

A. We offer 1 1/2", 1 3/4", 2" and 2 1/4" lengths in various grades and types, all of which are available to purchase directly via our online store. Please note that available volume is subject to in-stock inventory.

Q. What is the diameter of Scott Labs' cork?

A. Sterisun and natural corks are available in 24 mm +/- .5 mm. 1+1 corks are available in 24 mm diameter.

Q. What is the minimum quantity required for cork orders?

A. All corks are sold in 1,000 lot increments, so we have a minimum requirement of 1,000 corks per order.

Q. What's the best way to properly store corks?

A. Corks should be stored in a cool dry location, not in a bottling room, barrel storage area, or chemical storage area. The temperature should be 55º to 70º F and the humidity  50 to 70%.

Q. How long can corks be stored until they are no longer useable?

A. If corks haven't been opened and are stored properly, they are usable for up to six months. If cork bags have been opened, they should be returned to a close-able container and sealed tightly. For a minimal charge, Scott Laboratories will reprocess, re-moisturize, and re-SO2 corks purchased from us.

Q. What size cork should be used for an oversized or large format bottle?

A. To determine the right size cork for your bottle, find the bottle ID and multiple it by 1.333. This will provide the diameter of cork needed.

Q. Does Scott Labs have a minimum order quantity for oversized corks?

A. For oversized corks, we require a 6-cork minimum per order.

Q. Can corks be printed with custom winery logos and branding?

A. Yes! We offer both stock and custom options for cork and closure orders. A printing dye is made from customer supplied black and white artwork. Depending on the size of cork you are ordering, the artwork should fit into a 34-45 mm x 72 mm rectangle.

Q. What are the price breaks for cork orders?

A. Price breaks for cork orders occur at quantities of 5,000, 10,000, 100,000, 500,000 and 1 million.

Q. What to check for when bottling with natural corks?

A. The three things to always check when bottling with natural corks are vacuum, temperature and fill level.

Q. What is the proper insertion depth for champagne or sparkling wine cork?

A. Proper insertion depth for sparkling wine cork is typically 22-25mm.

Q. What is the lead time for custom cork orders?

A. Due to precise branding and logo matching, average lead times for custom cork orders can vary from 2-3 weeks. All custom corks are laser branded in our warehouse at our Petaluma, CA headquarters.
